Telephones

A PABX run telephone is installed in each room. This telephone system provides each resident with a personal answering machine facility. BGCommunications

As well, residents are able to make internal university calls at no charge. The office provides residents with a PIN to make external calls. This PIN is also used when messages are to be retrieved.

Information sheets regarding the operation of the telephones will be supplied upon arrival at Hall, and can be downloaded here. A public phone is located in Central Block.

Any resident who receives nuisance or offensive phone calls should advise Hall Office staff. The abuse of residents' privacy in this way is not tolerated and offenders may face disciplinary action. Telephone calls made in Hall can be traced very easily.

It is Hall policy not to divulge residents' phone and room numbers except where the Head or Dean identifies an exceptional circumstance.

Calls made from a PABX telephone are charged at a higher rate. Currently, the charge is 20 cents for a local telephone call; STD and ISD rates are available from the Hall's office.

Internet Connection

In each residential room there is a network connection which allows for direct connection to the internet, the B&G network and the wider ANU network.

The use of this connection is determined by the resident, however if any misuse of the service (including both B&G rules and/or ANU IT policies) is found to be occurring, the connection can be revoked immediately.

The internet charges are as follows:
External web pages: 1c per MB
ANU: 0c per MB

*B&G internet costs are completely separate to ANU’s internet quota system.

Also, evey room offers ANU digital TV with all local channels and a few international channels for free.

Mail & Fax

Incoming mail is placed in alphabetical pigeon holes next to the office in Central Block. Residents should note that parcels and letters marked "Personal & Confidential" are held in the office for collection. A collection slip is left in your pigeon hole. This held mail cannot be collected outside office hours. Residents are reminded that cash should not be sent in the mail under any circumstances.

Please ensure that your mail is addressed correctly (in English) as follows:

Your full name BGCommunications2
Burton and Garran Hall
Building 49

ANU Canberra ACT 0200

Faxes may be sent and received from the Hall Office. A "Resident Facsimile Service" coversheet must be filled out for  each fax sent. The cost is $1.05 per page for faxes within Australia and $3.20 per page for international faxes including the cover sheet. Faxes received for residents are placed in the mail pigeon holes. Please ensure the sender puts your full name on incoming faxes.

Guests

Casual visitors are welcome at B&G, under the guidance of a residential family member or friend. Casual visitors are permitted to stay at B&G for short periods only, not exceeding three days. There is a charge of $5 per day. The Hall can provide a folding bed for guests, but residents need to provide their own linen. Office Staff must be notified prior to midday in order to receive a folding bed. Residents are responsible for the behaviour of their guests in and around the Hall. It is important that visitors do not disrupt Hall residents.
