 Health & Wellbeing Learning Community

This is an evolving Learning Community starting with a speaker from Sexual Health & Family Planning, ANU Health Centre, the Australian Institute of Sport and the John Curtin School of Medical Research.

The events are organised by our Academic Scholars in conjunction with the Sexuality Officers. This will encompass nutrition and cooking - especially important in a self catered Hall with the largest kitchen on campus.

Speaker Series - Sexual Health

B&G Speaker Series: Sexual Health
Date held: 26th May 2009
Location: Redbacks lounge
Co-ordinator: Jerome Barty-Taylor
Estimated Attendance: 85 people

The Event

Nurse Sue Fallon from the ANU Medical Centre spoke first about the role of the Centre on campus and how it can benefit students. She also relayed some worrying statistics on the incideilce of STIs on campus. Dr. Clare Holberton & Nurse Libby McCutchan then talked about different forms of available contraception and the symptolns and effects of different STls. Everyone in the audience learnt something from their talks, as evidenced, the question fielding continued for 25 minutes after they spoke. A slight technical glitch with the Bar's projector was rapidly fixed by Samitha - fortunately this occurred between the presentations, providing a natural break in the programme.

Outcomes

All three speakers remarked their surprise at the large turn-out, as did the Academic Team (!) Evidently such information of Sexual Health and Safe-sex practice is still relevant lecture material. The attendance also represented a wide stratum of the B&G community, with about 20 or so Internationals and 12 Exchanges. There was a broad mix of First and Later year students. The Event was canvassed as a product of the 'B&G Health and Wellbeing Learning Community'. Given the good turn-out, it is clear that there is interest in the B&G community for the existence of such a group. Both Sexuality Officers and other members of the community voiced interest in holding another Speaker Series Event or perhaps more of a forum, later in the year focussing around Sexuality. as happened in 2007. Attendees who were polled also expressed interest in having more hands-on events, for example, a cooking demonstration.
