AcademicSub-DeansEach year there are two Sub-Deans appointed to support the Head, the Dean and the Senior Residents (SR's) in their duties. One Sub-Dean is responsible for Pastoral Support and the other is responsible for the Academic Support Program. Senior ResidentsEach Senior Resident is responsible for the well being of the residents of their allocated floor. Residents are encouraged to go to their floor SR for assistance with academic or personal issues pertaining to the Hall. SR's play a crucial pastoral role. They are available to help the residents on their floor and to provide referral to ANU facilities. SRs also have disciplinary authority, which, if the need arises, will be carried out in a friendly but firm manner. SRs must be notified in the event of an emergency (such as fire, flooding, serious illness or vandalism) but also if a nasty or disruptive situation should arise. Every SR is a trained First Aid Officer and has been provided with a First Aid Kit. After office hours and on weekends there are two SR's rostered on duty, as well as one Sub-Dean. The Duty SR's are responsible for the security and general welfare of Hall residents during this time.
SportingBurton and Garran Hall is involved in the Interhall Sports competition at the ANU. This involves competing in a wide array of sports which contribute points towards the annual sports shield. All residents are encouraged to have a go at the various sports and you'll have a great time if you do. The is a total of 4 sports reps within the hall who are part responsible for the college's sporting equipment, and for organizing teams in each of the sports. At the end of the year a sports night is held to conclude the year of sporting events and to pay recognition to those members of the hall who participated in the hall sports.
ArtsFor those individuals who are creative and cultural, there is: Theatre Sports, Chess, Debates, Public Speaking, Trivia Competition, the annual Art Exhibition, Musical Recitals, Talent Night, Poetry and Short Story Writing. These all contribute towards the Interhall Arts Shield. InternationalBurton and Garran Hall is a multi-cultural community, with over a third of our residents being international students. International students call B&G "home", while either completing their degree in Canberra, or participation in one of the university's exchange programs. For further information see the ANU International Website. The International Committee has been formed to encourage international students' involvement in the hall. The Hall aims to make everyone feel welcome and to foster a bond between international and local students and to promote multiculturalism at B&G. The Burton and Garran Members' Association (BAGMA) International Committee is a committee set-up to assist, help, develop and promote students, especially international, and their interests. The Committee is formed on the basis of interest and comes under the jurisdiction of the BAGMA International Representative, who is the coordinator of the committee. Every year, a group of friendly, dedicated and enthusiastic B&G residents are appointed as members to the committee by the International Rep. They represent nearly all major regions of the world, including Australia. This year's Committee Members come from a diverse background, as well as having a wealth of experience. In general, the two main aims for the International Committee are to be ambassadors in the hall and to assist the International Rep with his roles and duties. As ambassadors for the hall, International Committee members are constantly taking an active part by contributing and participating in B&G's extra-curricular activities and events. In addition, they are at all times encouraging international students' involvement in the hall and to make them feel welcome and at home. Finally, committee members help foster a bond between international and local students and to promote multiculturalism at B&G. In supporting the International BAGMA Rep, International Committee Members play a major role in planning, organizing and running of international events and functions throughout the year at B&G. This year 4 major events are planned; as well as numerous other events held jointly with other groups around the hall. It is important that everyone at B&G realize that International Committee Members can be approached at anytime with concerns or queries. They also have relevant information about other international organizations and societies around campus and Canberra; as the Committee is also acting as a point of contact and/or assistance for these groups at B&G.
TransportThere are several methods of transport to and from B&G Hall, all of which are highly convenient. Public TransportThe hall is located on the intertown bus route with a stop merely metres from the front of B&G. The bus route takes about ten minutes to travel to the city centre and twenty minutes to reach the Belconnen shopping centre. Students (concession) pay half the adult fare upon proof of student status (university ID). B&G Shopping TripsShopping trips to various supermarkets are conducted on a regular basis in the halls mini-bus. Also on weekends, trips are conducted to the fresh food markets at either Belconnen or Fyshwick.
After Hours “Brian’s” Bus ServiceThe University operates a free after-hours bus service from Monday to Friday during the academic year. The bus route traverses the University stopping at Union Court, major libraries and all student residences. The current timetable and map is available at the ANU Security website. Vehicle Parking at B&GB&G have two car parking allotments. Those residents who intend to park a motor vehicle at Burton and Garran Hall or on the University campus must purchase a University Parking Permit. University Parking Permits can be purchased, in person, from Parking Administration at Facilties and Services in the John Yencken Building, or over the phone, on 6249 3649 (ext : 1 3649). Once you have obtained the University Parking Permit and the staff in our office have sighted it, you will be issued with a Resident Parking Sticker, enabling you to use the parking area reserved for Hall Residents. Please note that there is no guarantee that a space will be free. More permits are issued than space provided. Both permits need to be prominently displayed on your car. Parking Infringement Notices may be issued if either of the two permits are not visibly displayed. Residents must observe Hall, University and ACT guidelines on parking. This means that there must be no parking alongside curbs painted yellow, nor on a grassed area, pathways, courtyards or areas between the residential blocks. Roads within the University are classified as public roads for the purposes of the ACT Motor Traffic Act and the University Parking and Traffic Offices and the Australian Federal Police under the provisions of the relevant legislation. An outline and relevant maps to ANU Parking can be found online by clicking here. Although security around campus is excellent, car theft is still a reality and does occur. B&G and the University encourages all car owners to protect themselves against theft by installing an immobilizer and placing a steering lock on vehicles at all appropriate times. B&G also offer a very well priced rental system on car steering locks; enquire at the office. Bicycle RacksBicycle racks are located all around B&G in order to secure residents bikes. In combination with the racks, we suggest that you purchase a U-bolt to secure the bikes to the racks. These can be purchased at the B&G office for a reduced price. Security EscortsAny ANU student, including B&G residents may request an ANU security escort between any two points on the university grounds. This is highly recommended for people walking home from work at night time… females and males alike. |
