Burton & Garran HallOn behalf of our community, I would like to extend a warm welcome to Burton & Garran Hall for the 2011 academic year. As part of the broader community of The Australian National University, we are the largest Hall of Residence counting over 500 students and researchers in our family. Our residents and staff are drawn from all parts of the country and the world and study in every College of ANU. While our size is a great strength and source of diversity, we are also mindful that each resident comes to our Hall with their own individual story worthy of respect and understanding. To build a healthy and supportive community from such diversity requires each of us to value these stories and to respect the rights and needs of other residents of Burton and Garran Hall. The Burton & Garran Hall Handbook provides some guide to the ethos, policies, rules and structure of the B&G Hall community.B&G is great place to explore different paths. The jump from high school to university can be daunting, but there are many making the same leap with you. This is a great chance to try new experiences, to break the mould and perhaps re-shape yourself a little. If you have harboured an interest in music, or sport or politics or the environment, and not had the opportunities to be involved before, now is your chance. And more than likely there will be other B&G residents interested in the same things. I urge you to make those connections with others and push yourself to see what else you can do. The friendships you make here in college will be life-long and the best memory you will retain of your time at B&G. Your peers will also be your most effective support in achieving your academic potential. Our symbol is the Redback spider. A beautiful Australian arachnid, much feared for living under toilet seats! Despite its deadly reputation, B&G is an open, friendly, fun and academically focussed community of scholars. I invite you to make the most of the academic and social opportunities our community offers and I look forward to meeting you as the year progresses. Keith Conley |
